3G videophone/PDA will run Windows Mobile

Taiwanese ODM Compal Communications Inc. (CCI) is developing a 3G cellular videophone/PDA running Windows Mobile 5.0, according to Radvision, the supplier of a 3G-324M protocol toolkit to CCI. The new 3G handheld will include an "advanced" video application that lets users subscribe to video conferences and participate in video communities, Radvision says.

CCI's new 3G PDA/videophone will be based on an Intel PXA270 XScale processor, according to Radvision. The company says it developed the CCI videophone application using its 3G-324M Toolkit, in collaboration with both Microsoft and Intel. The toolkit includes APIs for 3G-based multimedia communication devices.

About 3G-324M

According to the 3G-324M Forum, 3G-324M is derived from the H.324M specification, which was defined by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in order to standardize multimedia communication over mobile networks. The 3G-324M modifications to H.324M address issues surrounding delay-sensitive real-time multimedia communications such as video conferencing.

Although the theoretical bandwidth of a full IP 3G network, 2 to 10 Mbps, should be sufficient to satisfy the needs of delay-sensitive communication, in practice bandwidth decreases as the number of users per cell and the distance from the cell increase, the Forum notes. 3G-324M solves these problems by using a dedicated circuit-switched channel of 64 Kbps, along with using the existing technologies of the circuit-switched network for functions such as addressing, billing, and management. This allows immediate deployment of video conferencing applications over 2.5G, 2.75G, and 3G networks, according to the Forum.

3G-324M is an "umbrella specification," comprised of the following sub-protocols, according to Radvision:

H.245 for call control
H.223 for bit streams to data packets multiplexer/demultiplexer
H.223 Annex A and B for error handling of low and medium BER detection, correction, and concealment
H.324 with Annex A and C for operating in wireless environment

Availability

CCI is described as "one of the largest ODMs [original design manufacturers] in the world," having supplied wireless handsets to Motorola, Panasonic, and Alcatel, among others. The company is headquartered in Taiwan and has manufacturing facilities in Nan Jing, China.

A release date for CCI's new 3G videophone/PDA device was not stated.
