Windows CE-based PMP recognizes handwriting
Jun. 02, 2008

iRiver says it is now shipping a PMP (personal media player) with a 4-inch, 800 x 480 touchscreen display and a 33MB 1.3-inch hard drive. The Windows CE-based "P.ple P10" offers handwriting recognition, e-book reading functionality, and an optional TV tuner, according to the company.

The P10 uses the Windows CE 5.0 operating system, to which iRiver has added its own custom graphical user interface implemented using Adobe's Flash Lite 2.1 software. Operable via a finger or the included stylus, the device includes simple handwriting recognition (right), apparently similar to that offered by the first Palm Pilot. This permits editing Microsoft Word and Excel documents, the company says.

The device includes English, Chinese, and Japanese dictionaries, and can also be used as an e-Book reader, supporting text and .PDF formats. Via a built-in microphone, it can also record voice messages.

Of course, the P10's core mission in life is playing back music and video. Its four-inch display has a native resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, and shows video in MPEG1/2, MPEG4, XviD, and WMV formats. Source resolutions can be up to 30 frames per second, with resolution up to 720 x 480.

The iRiver P10 shows video in a variety of formats, and has an optional TV tuner

As is typical for devices based on Windows CE or Windows Mobile, still pictures (in JPEG or BMP formats) and music are also played back with ease. The P10 supports MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, and WAV formats. Optionally, there's also a TV tuner for receiving Korea's T-DMB broadcasts.

The P10 has processing power that would shame many a phone or PDA, thanks to use of a 600MHz version of RMI's AU1250. iRiver did not specify how long the P10 will play back media using its 3000mAH battery; however, RMI says the 600MHz AU1250 can play 720 x 480 video while using only 700mW.

Also unspecified is how much RAM the P10 includes. This omission is excusable, however, since the device does not allow installation of third-party Windows CE software. For holding media, it comes with a 33MB, 1.3-inch hard disk drive, along with a USB 2.0 port for data transfer.

Features and specifications listed by iRiver for the P.ple P10 include:
  • Processor -- RMI AU1250 clocked at 600MHz
  • Memory -- n/a
  • Storage -- 33MB hard disk drive
  • Display -- 4-inch display with 800 x 480 resolution
  • I/O:
    • 1 x USB 2.0
    • earphone jack
    • video output (connector type unspecified; may use same 3.5mm jack as earphone)
  • Battery -- 3000mAH
  • Dimensions -- 4.25 x 2.9 x 0.75 inches (108 x 74 x 19mm)
  • Weight -- 7.2 ounces (205g)
  • Operating temperature -- -5 to 40 deg. C
The P10 is available now in Korea for 328,000 won (approximately $320), and the TV tuner adds another 70,000 won (approximately $70) to the price.
