Fanless POS terminal runs WEPOS

Protech Systems has introduced a new point-of-sale terminal that runs Microsoft's retail-oriented WEPOS (Windows Embedded for Point of Service) flavor of Windows XP Embedded. The fanless PS8831 operates at a noise level below 35 db, making it suitable for hotels, restaurants, and other noise-sensitive businesses, the company says.

The PS8831 is based on a 1 GHz ultra-low-voltage Celeron processor, and accommodates up to 1 GB of DDR SDRAM. A 40 GB 2.5-inch swappable hard drive is standard, as is a bootable CompactFlash slot. Additional storage options include a slim CD-ROM or a slim 3.5-inch FDD, according to Protech.

The device's 12.1-inch TFT LCD supports a standard resolution of 800 x 600 pixels, with 1024 x 768 optionally available. A 5-wire "E-turbo" resistive touchscreen is standard, but a 7-wire Fujitsu touchscreen is available as an option. The display unit tilts through a range from 30 to 85 degrees for optimal viewing angle, the company adds.

Input/output ports include:

10/100 Ethernet
5 USB 2.0 -- 1 front, 4 rear
4 serial -- COM1 to COM3 on DB9 connectors, COM4 on RJ45
DB25 parallel port
PS/2 mouse/keyboard port
AC97 audio -- mic in, line in/out
VGA connector
Cash drawer port -- RJ11 connector; selectable between 12 and 24 volts

Protech says the front-mounted USB port is specifically intended for use with an optional fingerprint reader, for enhanced security.

The PS8831 appears to be available now. Pricing was not disclosed.
