| Phones rev'd to Windows Mobile 6.1 |
Oct. 09, 2008
Two more smartphones have been treated to downloadable Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrades. The ROM upgrades, for Pantech's Duo and Samsung's "Jack" (SGH-i616), are said to provide features such as a task manager and threaded SMS, according to the companies.
Pantech and Samsung both simply state that their downloadable ROM upgrades provide the devices with Windows Mobile 6.1, though the former company cites "various other enhancements" without providing further details. As on other devices, the OS upgrade provides a new task manager, threaded SMS, and compatibility with Microsoft's System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008.
Pantech's Duo, pictured above and below, made its debut in Oct. 2007, offering users a choice of two different keyboards. According to AT&T, the device features both dual-band domestic and quad-band "world phone" calling modes, and its data mode delivers download speeds averaging between 600Kbps and 1.4Mbps.
The Pantech Duo offers two key-entry options (Click each image to enlarge) Meantime, the Duo offers a 416MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, 128MB of flash storage, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. For more information, see our earlier coverage, here.
Samsung's SGH-i616, also known as the Jack, is marketed in Canada by the carriers Rogers and Fido, and looks identical to the SGH-i617, sold as the Blackjack II (below) by AT&T in the U.S. However, the Jack apparently features just dual-band (900 and 1800MHz) GSM and 2100MHz UMTS capability, whereas the Blackjack II adds 850MHz and 1900MHz GSM frequencies, plus 850MHz and 1900MHz UMTS.
Samsung's Jack and Blackjack II look identical, except for carrier logos Both the Jack and Blackjack include 260MHz TI OMAP2420 processors, 128MB of RAM, and 256MB of flash storage. The devices have full QWERTY keyboards and 2.4-inch QVGA displays. For more details, see our earlier coverage, here.
Further information
The ROM upgrades must be performed via software utilities that run on Windows Vista or XP desktop computers. As usual, they will erase any data stored on a phone, which should be backed up beforehand, the companies warn.
