'iPhone killer' merges phone, PMP, Windows CE

Sophia Mobile of Japan has released the Nani, a device that combines cellphone and portable media player (PMP) functionality. As on Apple's iPhone, all dialing is done via the device's touchscreen display; but unlike the iPhone, the Nani runs a customized version of Windows CE.

The Nani outdoes the iPhone by providing a 4.3-inch-wide, WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) display touchscreen display. It also includes a digital TV tuner.

Using the included version 10 of Windows Media Player, the device can play a wide variety of audio and video file types. Supported video formats include MPEG1/2/4, WMV9, DivX, and Xvid, while usable audio formats include WAV, WMA, MP3, and OGG Vorbis.

The Nani is also said to include two different cameras. One, on the front, offers 640 x 480-pixel resolution and is intended for videoconferencing. The other, on the rear, features "SVGA" resolution along with macro capabilities.

The Nani does not, however, come with any integral mass storage. Instead, storage must be added via the unit's microSD card slot.

Built-in wireless connectivity includes 802.11b/g and "PHS" (Personal Handyphone System), a relatively short-range wireless "microcell" system used by Japan's Willcom. The PHS function is implemented via Willcom's version of the SIM card, called W-SIM.
