Asustek to launch Smartphone in Taiwan [Digitimes]
Dec. 28, 2002

Microsoft has snared a big design win for its Smartphone software platform, according to Digitimes.com. They report Taiwan-based motherboard maker Asustek Computer plans to launch a Smartphone in the second quarter of 2003.

WindowsForDevices.com sees the development as timely news for Microsoft, whose CE-based Smartphone was only launched in late October. As a result, Microsoft is playing a game of catch up as it competes against the more entrenched Symbian cell-phone operating system.

Moreover, Microsoft was battered last month when Sendo, which had signed on to Smartphone, defected to Symbian. But the Asustek Smartphone design win seems to indicate that Microsoft is more resilient in the mobile sector than some analysts expected. That's our interpretation, anyway.

Separately, the Digitimes.com story reported that Asustek plans to roll out their second Pocket PC next year. The model will be a successor to its current Mypal A600.
