AutoID data collection terminal runs Windows CE
Apr. 12, 2007

Intelligent Instrumentation has released a new model in its family of "open architecture" data-collection terminals. The compact, rugged LANpoint 7 AutoID terminal, based on a 400MHz Intel XScale processor running Windows CE 4.2, includes wired and wireless networking capabilities and targets industrial manufacturing and supply-chain applications.

The LANpoint 7 offers non-volatile data storage of up to 500MB, comes standard with 10/100BaseT Ethernet connectivity, and can be configured with a choice of 802.11b/g WLAN or Sierra Wireless EDGE/GPRS/GSM WAN wireless options. Other key features, according to the company, include a bright, half-VGA LCD screen (optionally available with a touchscreen) and a variety of expansion interfaces and slots.

The LANpoint 7 terminal's wide operating temperature range (-20 to +55 degrees C), drip- and dust-proof case, and lack of internal moving parts make the device particularly suitable for use in dusty, dirty, and wet industrial environments, the company notes.

The device comes with built-in support for TCP/IP, SNMP, MSMQ, Microsoft Terminal Services Client, and remote individual device management provided by a Web-server application. In addition, "all popular terminal emulation interfaces are available," including VT, HP, IBM5250, and IBM3270, according to the company. An available kiosk mode can be used to limit system access to a single "approved" web-based application.

Additionally, Intelligent Instrumentation says, the device's internal Windows CE 4.2 software platform lets programmers "use their existing desktop development skills with C/C++ or Microsoft's Visual Studio development tools for creating custom managed-code solutions in Visual Basic or Visual C#."

Key features and specifications, as listed by the company, include:
  • Processor -- 400MHz PXA255 XScale
  • Memory -- 32MB RAM; 64MB flash
  • Display -- 640 x 240 (QVGA) backlit color LCD with optional touchscreen
  • Keyboard -- Sealed elastomeric 69-key QWERTY keyboard with function keys
  • Networking:
    • LAN -- 10/100Base-T Ethernet
    • WLAN -- 802.11b/g (optional, via PCMCIA)
    • WAN -- Sierra Wireless EDGE/GPRS/GSM (optional, via PCMCIA)
  • Scanner options -- infrared barcode, visible red barcode, mag stripe
  • Other input/output ports:
    • 3 x COM ports
    • PS/2 keyboard/mouse ports
    • Digital I/O (optional)
  • Expansion:
    • PCMCIA Type I/II/III (typically used for wireless cards)
    • CompactFlash (option)
  • Dimensions -- 11.2 x 9.2 x 3.7 inches
  • Shock/vibration -- MIL-STD-810E
  • Operating temperature -- -20 to +55 degrees C
  • Power Requirements -- 17.2-28 VAC or 17.2-35 VDC
