Compact SBC integrates CAN, runs Windows Embedded

Anders Electronics has introduced a compact, low-power single-board computer (SBC) with a built-in CAN (controller area network) fieldbus interface, in addition to the usual array of PC-style interface ports. The PC/104-expandable SBX-iGLX also provides a PCMCIA interface, and supports Windows CE and Windows XP Embedded, according to the company.

The SBX-iGLX is based on AMD's Geode LX processors, and can be supplied with up to 256 MB of soldered-on DDR RAM and up to 512 MB of flash memory. It is available in two sizes: a standard PC/104 format module, with pin headers for peripheral connections; and a stretched version, which brings USB, Ethernet, and VGA ports to normal, PC-style connectors.

The module implements the PC/104-Plus standard's PCI and ISA buses, enabling it to accommodate the widest range of available peripheral modules, according to Anders. The PCMCIA (aka Cardbus) slots can be used for adding features such as wireless (GSM or 3G) modems, GPS receivers, WLAN interfaces and solid-state disks.

Anders lists the following key features and specifications for the SBX-iGLX:

Processor -- Geode LX700 or LX800, clocked at 400 MHz or 533 MHz respectively
Memory -- 128 or 256 MB of DDR RAM; 128 or 512 MB flash
Display -- VGS, LVDS LCD, and TFT panel outputs
Storage -- UDMA ATA-100
Other I/O ports:
- Single or dual 10/100 Ethernet
- 3 x USB 2.0 host
- 2 x serial -- RS232 on RJ11 connector; RS232/422/485 on pin header
- CAN bus controller and driver with galvanic isolation and DC separation
- AC97 audio -- header for mic in, line in, and line out
- GPIO -- 9 to 14 lines on pin header
Expansion:
- PCI and ISA buses in PC/104-Plus format
- single or dual PCMCIA/Cardbus slots
Power -- regulated 3.3V or 5V, unregulated 12 to 48V, @ 3 to 6 W, depending on configuration

The SBX-iGLX is immediately available, priced $360 (qty. 500) for a typical configuration ($450 for quantity 100), according to Anders. Additionally, a depopulated version is offered for around $150 (qty. 10,000).
