| Windows CE Shared Source Contest winners announced |
Aug. 16, 2006
The first-ever Windows CE Shared Source Contest has drawn to a close, and three winning submissions have been awarded Xbox 360 game consoles and other goodies. The contest, which ran from May 23 through July 28, challenged developers to create an exciting Windows CE-based real-world project.
The official theme of the contest, co-sponsored by Microsoft's Mobile and Embedded Devices (MED) group and WindowsForDevices.com, was "Show-It-Off at the Shared Source Project Competition." Contest participants were encouraged to create cool, practical projects combining Windows CE 5.0 along with either or both of two Shared Source components -- the Windows CE WebCam driver and/or the Windows CE DVR engine.
"We worked with WindowsforDevices.com to create this contest, in part to address misconceptions around our Shared Source programs," explained Nic Sagez, a product manager in Microsoft's MED group.
"Windows CE has source code available for customers, partners, developers, governments, academicians, and other interested individuals, for many components including the kernel, the file system and the networking stack," added Sagez. "By providing key resources to the embedded development community, we continue delivering on the model of shared success that reduces the barriers to entry found in traditional device development, helping device-makers bring their next-generation devices to market faster while minimizing their total cost of development and protecting their investment in their IP."
And the winners are...
The following submissions were selected as winners by our distinguished panel of judges (listed below). Click the title of each project for a more detailed description (with pictures) of each project, and for links to each project's whitepaper and demonstration video.
| First Place | Smart Cameras for Smart Conference Rooms:
While many aspects of the typical office or university environment have adapted to today's fast-moving, information-rich, Internet-based reality, the conference room remains an anachronism. This project implements a "smart conference room appliance" using inexpensive, off-the-shelf components. The entry was submitted by Xin Hu, on behalf of himself and team-mates Zhigang Chen and Scott Gifford.

The high profile of SUVs and other large vehicles presents a dangerous blind-spot to their drivers when backing up. This project, submitted by David Vescovi, aims to help avoid rear-end accidents, both minor and catastrophic, using a rear-mounted webcam.
