Audio app adds DJ capability to Windows Mobile smartphones
Aug. 13, 2004

The smartphone is set to take center stage playing a dance set at FutureDJ, part of the ISEA2004 arts festival in Reading, England. Festival director Drew Hemment will use a Windows Mobile smartphone to create on-the-fly mixes using SSEYO miniMIXA, a "feature-packed, multi-channel audio mixer and recording studio application" powered by the intent Sound System (iSS) from the Tao Group.

The software features a wide range of per-channel sound effects and visualizers, along with support for a number of DJ-like mixing techniques, according to Tao. An intuitive interface makes it simple to create mixes from a collection of included beats, basses, chords, leads, and sounds, and then apply per-track sound effects. Music and mixes created by users can be saved and played for fun, sent to friends by MMS or stored on the phone as a unique ringtone.

SSEYO miniMIXA is also a "very cool" music application for mobile network operators and device manufacturers, Tao says. The program gives users the means to personalize their phone experience and have fun creating content to share with others. Additionally, the availability of content packs is said to keep the program "fresh" and allow operators to generate additional revenue streams and grow retail channel models.

For musicians, songwriters, and the creative community the SSEYO miniMIXA can both "open doors to new audiences and provide a new creative dimension to DJ'ing, mixing and composition," Tao adds.

Technology Background

Powered by Tao's intent Sound System (iSS), SSEYO miniMIXA draws on a range of advanced audio technologies within the iSS. These software technologies are said to include comprehensive audio and MIDI frameworks, modular synthesiser, wavetable polyphonic MIDI synthesiser, generative music engine, audio effects plug-ins, visualizers, and a range of codecs for standard and innovative formats.

Features include:
  • SSEYO Koan Music Engine -- The BAFTA1 generative music engine can create amazing and continuous music from files of only a few KB.

  • Tao Modular Synthesizer -- An integrated framework allows playback of the most amazing and advanced live sounds, FX and music.

  • SKM (SSEYO Koan Mobile) format -- this open and extendable XML-based container format allows content to use the Modular Synthesiser and Koan Music Engine, as well as MIDI and compressed audio samples.
Tao says that it plans to announce audio partners for the first wave of SSEYO miniMIXA content packs, and that it welcomes the interest of new artists and music owners who would like to be involved. SSEYO MIXApaks can include custom background imagery that displays each time a mix is created from the pack, thereby providing strong visual branding opportunities for content partners.
