Rugged computer runs Windows XP Embedded, CE
Mar. 19, 2008

Aaeon has introduced a fanless computer using Intel Celeron CPUs and running Windows XP Embedded or Windows CE. The Boxer AEC-6905 is designed for vehicle mounting, has PCI and PC/104-Plus expansion, CompactFlash storage, and operates on DC power from 9-30 volts, Aaeon says.

Described as "mustard-colored" by Aaeon, the device has an aluminum chassis, with mounting holes that allow it to be fixed securely to a wall or floor. Its case doubles as a heat sink, allowing the AEC-6905 to operate without a fan.

The device's chipset is not specified, but it supports Intel Celeron M processors from 600MHz to 1GHz, and provides integrated VGA output. A single SODIMM socket accepts up to 1GB of DDR memory.

The AEC-6905 allows for either rotating or solid-state disk storage, with both an SATA/IDE interface and an externally accessible CompactFlash slot. Whichever is utilized, the device appears to be more resistant to shock and heat than most computers. With an SSD (solid-state disk), it is rated to withstand a 50g shock of 11msec duration; with a HDD (hard disk drive), that rating falls to 20g. The computer's operating temperatures range from -20 to 60 deg. C with an SSD, and from -20 to 55 deg. C with an HDD.

A 10/100 Ethernet connector and analog VGA output are included on the computer. The AEC-6905 also offers four USB ports, four serial ports, and a PS/2 port for keyboard and mouse. Audio mic-in, line-in, and line-out functionality is provided via a DIN connector and dedicated extension cable.

Finally, the AEC-6905's 13.3 x 11.6 x 10.3 case houses a PCI expansion slot, plus a PC/104-Plus interface with room for a two-board stack. It has a power jack that accepts DC inputs from 9VDC to 30VDC.

Features and specifications listed by Aaeon for the AEC-6095 include:
  • Processor -- Intel Celeron M from 600MHz to 1.5GHz
  • Memory -- up to 1GB of DDR RAM in single SODIMM slot
  • Display -- integrated VGA output; supported resolutions not specified
  • Networking -- 10/100 Ethernet port
  • Other I/O:
    • 4 x USB 2.0
    • 3 x RS232
    • 1 x RS232/422/485
    • 1 x PS/2
    • 1 x VGA
    • audio mic-in, line-in, and line-out via DIN connector
  • Expansion:
    • PCI slot (size not stated)
    • PC/104-Plus interface, accepts two-board stack
    • CompactFlash slot
  • Operating temperatures:
    • From -20 to 60 deg. C (with SSD)
    • From -20 to 55 deg. C (with HDD)
  • Dimensions -- 13.3 x 11.6 x 10.3 inches
  • Weight -- 12.3 pounds
  • Power requirements -- 9VDC to 30VDC; external AC adapter is optional
According to Aaeon, the AEC-6905 runs Windows CE, Windows XP Embedded, Windows XP, and Linux. The company did not provide pricing or availability information.
