Mobile app dev platform upgraded
Apr. 11, 2005

Adesso Systems has released a new version of its development platform for applications running on Windows Mobile-based devices. Version 3 of the Instant Mobility Platform allows enterprises to cost-effectively extend mission critical applications and information "to the edge of the business -- where workers interact with customers," according to the company.

Adesso says that the most significant enhancement in version 3 is the Extension Manager, which allows developers and power users to extend applications with components created using other development tools. This capability enables Adesso applications to be enhanced with custom-coded components from other programs via .NET libraries.

The company cites, as an example of using the Extension Manager, a healthcare organization whose data is subject to strict regulatory standards. It could deploy a business rules engine created outside of Adesso to validate data capture by a field worker according to regulations. As the user collects and submits data, the data is processed by the rules engine, and any error messages are passed back to the Adesso client and transparently presented to the user through the Adesso application interface.

Other new features listed by Adesso include:
  • File Synchronization -- applies Adesso's synchronization, security policy management, advanced routing and back office integration to folders and files on mobile devices.

  • Oracle Database Support -- extends the Adesso Platform to the Oracle database community to integrate Oracle with field-based processes.

  • Survey Engine -- helps customers configure and distribute surveys using an easy-to-use development wizard with advanced branching logic. Allows surveys to be built for data collection applications or incorporated into existing applications as a part of a customer service interaction.

  • Interactive Reporting -- helps sort and analyze data for additional insight into business process functions to aid in future business decisions.

  • User Interface and Navigation Enhancements- allows users to easily navigate through an application in a user "homepage" format linking individuals and work teams to their most important activities. Bitmap images and other graphical elements can be embedded into applications and distributed to any combination of PDA, laptop, tablet or desktop PC without re-factoring for screen real estate.
Adesso says its Platform selectively distributes and synchronizes data, alerts and applications logic, across multiple locations and devices. These "always-available" enterprise applications can be deployed on any Windows mobile device or computer, regardless of the bandwidth or availability of network connections.
