Bill Gates says Tablet PCs are the future of computing
Nov. 07, 2002

New York -- The big day has arrived. Bill Gates is formally rolling out the Tablet PC, and betting that it will rapidly become the cornerstone of mobile computing.

Technology wise, Microsoft says that the Tablet PCs, are evolutionary, not revolutionary. The units are essentially pen-based webpads.

Indeed, the look of the first crop of Tablet PCs isn't a surprise. Pictures of different implementations have been circulating for weeks, if not months. Products are planned from, among others, Hewlett-Packard, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Acer, Motion Computing, NEC, Tatung, Twinhead, Siemens, VIA Technologies, ViewSonic, and WalkAbout Computers, among others (many listed in related stories, below)

The TabletPC is certainly a closer relative of today’s notebook computers than it is of any Internet-enabled handheld device. It does not use either of the two available embedded operating systems from Microsoft. Instead, it uses something called Microsoft Windows Tablet PC edition.. That’s a superset which adds Microsoft’s "digital ink" cursive handwriting recognition code to the desktop XP OS. Nevertheless, it’s clear that tablets are relevant to the embedded-device space which we at WindowsForDevices.com follow so closely.

Indeed, the "digital ink" software may be the most interesting piece of new technology Microsoft is rolling out. The code is completely different -- and far more complex -- than previous recognition engines which have been used in conjunction with CE. How well will the software works in real-world conditions -- i.e., poorly scribbled notes -- could be the determining factor as to whether the tablets succeed or fail in the marketplace.

With so much going on on so many fronts, we’ve decided to use this space to list in one place all recent and upcoming TabletPC news. We will also continue to post all relevant news as separate stories by the Tablet PC introduction. Each item will then be added to the "related stories" link below.

So check back frequently: this page will be updated daily. -- Alexander Wolfe, WindowsForDevices.com
