21st century Wurlitzer jukebox plays digital audio, runs Windows CE

Gibson Audio's Wurlitzer Digital Jukebox, which recently won the "Best of Audio" award at the 2004 Consumer Electronics Show, and was selected by Popular Mechanics for an "Editor's Choice Award," will be showcased at the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) this week in San Francisco. When it hits production later this year, the device will run Windows CE in both its wireless remote and its base control unit.

The system is controlled by custom embedded computer boards developed by Applied Data Systems (ADS), and based on Intel PXA255 XScale and Cirrus 9315 processors. In addition to doing the embedded computer design, ADS also accomplished the port of Windows CE to the hardware.

According to Gibson Audio, "the Wurlitzer Digital Jukebox incorporates cutting edge technologies, elegant industrial design and an extremely simple user interface to provide the most comprehensive feature set of any digital audio device on the market."

Things you can do with the device include:

Store up to 1,000 CDs in digital format
Create song and album playlists
Create "mix" CDs
Access the Wurlitzer Music Service (including more than 100 digital radio channels and instant purchase of digital song downloads)
Manage this entire collection of music from any room in the house via a wireless handheld remote with a simple and elegant touch screen interface.

In addition to these features, the Jukebox also has a sound system featuring high-end Klipsch speakers.

Gibson Audio says the Wurlitzer Digital Jukebox reflects the company's philosophy that people prefer to manage their home entertainment devices without requiring complicated computers.

The Jukebox is offered in three models: a Floorstanding model, which features Klipsch speakers and 1,000 CD storage; a Component model, which is functionally identical to the Floorstanding model but without speakers and in a stereo rack form-factor; and a small Executive model that stores 500 CDs and also features Klipsch speakers. The three models will retail for $1,899, $1,499 and $999 respectively.
