Dec. 19, 2002
Vancouver, B.C. -- Intrinsyc Software Inc. has unveiled a next-generation MicroPDA (µPDA) handheld reference platform, and says they have snared Microsoft as a launch customer for the device.

The µPDA, which was codeveloped with Intel, is a full-featured, flexible platform intended for use in developing wireless handheld devices. Intrinsync says the heart of the µPDA is its flexible µEngine single board computer, which currently support Intel's XScale PXA250 or SA-1110 processors as well as Hitachi's SH3 and SH4. (Support for additional CPUs may be added in the future.)
On the software side, the µPDA is available with either Windows CE.NET, Pocket PC Phone Edition, or Smartphone software. (Linux is also offered.)
A four-inch display uses a high-contrast 64K color 480x640 VGA TFT LCD with CCFL backlighting and a resistive touchscreen. Depending on the choice of operating system, the display can be operated in landscape or portrait mode. User input can be made through the touchscreen, a soft on-screen keypad, or external keyboard or mouse attached through IrDA, Bluetooth, or USB interfaces.
The µPDA includes a tri-band GSM/GPRS phone that supports the full range of phone-related functions, such as voice calls, Internet browsing, email, and SMS messaging. These functions are included in the Pocket PC and Smartphone operating systems, and are supported under Windows CE and Linux by using Intrinsyc’s µPhone telephony software. The µPDA also includes an integrated VGA resolution color camera that can take digital photos and video clips. Audio features include a voice recorder, microphone, speaker and stereo output.
For high speed development and debugging, the µPDA has an Ethernet interface and a serial port. The µPDA is also expandable through its Compact Flash slot, MultiMedia Card and Secure Digital IO card slot.
If the µPDA doesn’t meet your precise needs, Intrinsyc says they can provide product development services ranging from requirements analysis, conceptual design and prototyping, to preproduction and production.
"This is cutting-edge technology," said Neil McDonnell, Intrinsyc President and CEO. "The fact Intel has collaborated on this project and Microsoft has purchased the µPDA reinforces the value of Intrinsyc's solutions for developing more advanced PDAs and other intelligent devices."
