UMPC integrates EV-DO wireless WAN

OQO is shipping a new model of its pioneering ultra-mobile PC, featuring integrated EV-DO Wireless WAN capability compatible with Verizon's BroadbandAccess service. The Model 02 has a 5-inch touchscreen, and includes up to a 1.5 GHz processor, 1GB of SDRAM, and a 60GB shock-mounted hard drive.

The Model 02 is the successor to the Model 01, which first shipped in October of 2004. Touted by OQO as "the world's smallest fully-functional PC," the Model 02 measures 5.6 x 3.3 x 1.0 inches and weighs "under one pound" with its standard battery. The device boasts a backlit, 58-key "thumb" keyboard with vertical and horizontal capacitive "touchscrollers," along with an active digitizer on the 5-inch wide-VGA LCD.

Verizon says that its BroadbandAccess data service offers average download speeds of 400-700 kilobits per second, and claims that the high-speed data network currently serves over 200 million customers in more than 240 "major metropolitan" U.S. areas.

OQO lists the following key features and specifications for the model 02:
  • Processor -- 1.5 GHz Via C7M ULV; 1.2 GHz optional
  • Chipset -- Via VX700 with integrated GPU (graphics processor unit)
  • Memory -- 1 GB 533 MHz DDR2 SDRAM; 512 MB optional
  • Display:
    • 5-inch WVGA (800 x 480) LCD
    • adjustable brightness; ambient light sensor
    • external display support:
      • VGA, HDMI, and DVI monitors up to 1920x1200 resolution
      • detects and recalls external display settings
      • simultaneous dual-display; choice of mirrored or extended desktop mode
  • Storage -- 60 GB shock-mounted HDD with drop detect technology
  • I/O ports:
    • 10/100 Ethernet
    • USB 2.0
    • AC97 audio:
      • built-in speaker and microphone
      • line in, line out jacks
      • HD audio support
  • Wireless:
    • Wireless WAN (optional) -- integrated EV-DO modem
    • tri-mode 802.11a/b/g WiFi with diversity
    • Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR
  • Supported operating systems:
    • Windows XP -- Tablet PC, Home, Professional
    • Windows Vista -- Ultimate, Business
According to Bob Rosin, OQO's senior VP of marketing and alliances, "Ultra mobile computing is about taking the same access to information and applications that you have at your desk, and putting it in a package you can carry with you all the time."

The Model 02 with embedded Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess capability appears to be available through the company's on-line store. Online pricing currently ranges between $1500 and $1850, with delivery times of up to 12 weeks, depending on options.
