Fanless Panel PCs sport Core 2 Duo
Jul. 25, 2008

Datasound Laboratories announced a Core 2 Duo-based panel PC that supports fanless operation and PCI expansion. The APC-3x17 runs Windows CE or Windows XP Embedded, has 15-, 17-, or 19-inch touschscreen displays, includes a 2.5-inch hard drive bay, and has dual gigabit Ethernet ports, says Datasound.

The APC-3x17 uses Intel's T5450 or T5550 Core 2 Duo processors. Running at 1.6GHz and 1.8GHz respectively, these 65nm CPUs have TDPs of 35 Watts, making them run warmer than is typically associated with fanless operation. However, Datasound says the APC-3x17 employs a heat pipe, channeling heat to the back of the device. In addition, a large heat sink covers the rear of the computer, as shown in our photo below.

The panel PC comes in three slightly different sizes, according to whether it has a 15-, 17-, or 19-inch resistive touchscreen display. The models, known as APC-3517, APC-3717, and APC-3917 respectively, all have room for a PCI expansion slot and a 2.5-inch hard drive bay. Maximum resolution on the APC-3517 is 1024 x 768 pixels, while it's 1280 x 1024 on the APC-3717 and APC-3917.

The Datasound APC-3x17's interfaces and PCI expansion slot

The above photo shows how the PCI expansion slot and the panel PCs' other interfaces gain access to the outside world. A recess in the bezel apparently helps channel cables and protect connectors from being bumped.

The APC-3x17 includes a VGA port for an external monitor, which likely can act as an independent display, though this was not promised. It additionally has a 17VDC port input, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, three serial ports, four USB ports, and two PS/2 connectors for a keyboard and a mouse. Microphone-in, line-in, and line-out audio jacks are also provided.

The RoHS-compliant device has a front bezel that meets the IP65 standard for resistance to dust and liquids.

Features and specifications cited by Datasound for the APC-3x17 include:
  • Processor -- Intel Core 2 Duo T5450, clocked at 1.6GHz, or T5550, clocked at 1.6GHz

Further information

The APC-3x17 runs Windows CE, Windows XP, and Windows XP Embedded (XPe), and Datasound says it will create XPe images free for any customers who are interested. While alternative operating system support was not specified, the devices' standard Intel chipsets likely allow them to run Linux, too.

Available now, the devices are built individually to each customer's specifications, according to the company. More information may be available from the Datasound website, here.
