Wibrain has introduced an ultra-mobile computer (UMPC) that weighs just over one pound and runs Windows XP on a 1.2GHz x86-compatible processor. The "B1" features quadruple input devices -- a touchscreen, directional keypad, touchpad, and a two-part QWERTY keyboard that brackets the device's 4.8-inch WSVGA display.

The B1's unusual form factor measures 7.6 x 3.3 x 1 inches. The keyboard is divied into two halves that flank the 4.8-inch, 1024 x 600 display. As the above photo shows, the device has a directional keypad on its left, with dedicated page up and page down keys, among others, and a laptop-style touchpad on the right.

According to Wibrain, the B1 uses Via's C7M ULV processor clocked at 1.2GHz, and VX700 graphics with 3D support. A model B1E includes 512MB of RAM and a 30GB hard drive, while model B1H has 1GB of RAM and a 60GB hard drive.

There's no SD slot for expanding storage or peripherals, or for transferring images from a camera. However, the B1 does have a USB port for connecting external devices. Other connectivity is provided by Bluetooth, and by 802.11b/g WiFi -- which can be turned off via a hardware switch to prolong battery life, Wibrain suggests.

Multimedia capabilities include stereo speakers, audio in/out, and a flip-up webcam. The B1 also includes a four-cell lithium-ion battery; Wibrain says it will operate for up to five hours per charge. Not bad, if true, for an x86-based mobile device.

The B1 is supplied with a power adapter, plus a cable that can connect it to a standard VGA monitor. Planned accessories include a desktop docking cradle that offers a DVD+RW drive, four USB ports, an SD card reader, and video output dongle supporting external 1280 x 1024 monitors. A car mounting cradle includes SiRF star III-based GPS capabilities, supplemental speakers, and an external DC input.

The Wibrain B1 is available now from online retailers for approximately $700 (model B1E) or $850 (model B1H), including the cost of Windows XP Home operating software. The desktop and car docking stations will be available in February, according to the company.
