HTC PDA/phone runs "future Windows Mobile"

HTC has announced a new PDA/phone it bills as running a "future version of Windows Mobile." The Advantage X7510 has a 5-inch VGA display, a detachable QWERTY keyboard, GSM/GPRS/EDGE telephony, WiFi, and both Internet Explorer and Opera Mobile 9 web browsers, according to the company.

The Advantage X7510 is an upgrade to HTC's earlier Advantage 7500 and 7501 devices, both of which also used a form factor that practically took them into UMPC territory. Measuring 4.5 x 3.9 x 0.6, the device has a keyboard like that of a small laptop.

In addition to facelifted styling, the X7510 includes a variety of improvements, according to HTC. It now has an improved keyboard with better feedback, a G-sensor that automatically adjusts the screen orientation of the device, and an impressive 16GB of flash storage, HTC says.

The software now includes HTC's TouchFLO interface, which is said to provide for finger touchscrolling and browsing of Web pages, documents, messages, and contact lists. A new HTC Home today screen provides easy access to emails, text messages, missed calls, calendar appointments, and contacts. The Opera web browser will also be included, though HTC did not say if this is the recently introduced Opera Mobile 9.5 version, which features increased speed and mobile widgets technology.

Most notable is the claimed "future version of Windows Mobile." This is likely to be Windows Mobile 6.1 (which might also be called Windows Mobile 6 Second Edition), which has been shown behind closed doors by Microsoft and scheduled for release "during the second quarter of 2008." Rumored features of Windows Mobile 6.1 include:Software aside, other features of the Advantage X7510 include a 624 MHz Marvell PXA270-series processor and 128MB of RAM. Its 5-inch touchscreen display is driven by an ATI Imageon W2284 graphics controller that also supports TV out. An optional "4-in-1" cable connects to a proprietary 18-pin interface on the phone and provides the following ports:
  • USB 1.1 host
  • VGA output
  • S-Video output
  • Composite video output
The Advantage 7510 works on tri-band 3G/HSDPA and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE cellular networks. It additionally includes both WiFi and stereo Bluetooth.

Audio capabilities include dual speakers and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The unit also has a three-megapixel camera, with auto focus and a flash LED. Finally, the Advantage also incorporates GPS via the Qualcomm MSM6275 chipset, supported by the included TomTom Navigator 6 software.

Key features and specs of the Advantage 7510, according to HTC, include:
  • Operating system -- "future" Windows Mobile (presumed to be Windows Mobile 6.1)
  • Processor: Marvell PXA270 clocked at 624MHz, with Qualcomm MSM6275 baseband processor
  • Memory --128MB RAM and 16GB flash
  • Wireless:
    • WAN -- tri-band 3G/HSDPA and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
    • WLAN -- WiFi 802.11b/g
    • PAN -- Bluetooth 2.0, stereo
  • Display -- 5 inch, 640 x 480 pixel TFT LCD
  • Keyboard -- attachable QWERTY-type keyboard with 49 keys and automatic backlighting
  • Camera:
    • 3 Megapixel
    • LED flash
    • records JPG or BMP still formats, records 3GPP and MPEG4 video
  • Audio:
    • Built-in mono microphone
    • stereo speakers
  • I/O ports:
    • USB host/client via mini-B connector
    • TV out via HTC expansion connector
  • Expansion -- miniSD card slot
  • Battery/operating times:
    • 2100 mAh battery
    • Talk time -- 300 minutes (WCDMA), 360 minutes (GSM)
    • Standby time -- 300 hours
  • Dimensions -- 4.5 x 3.9 x 0.6 inches (113.5 x 98 x 16mm), thickness with keyboard is 0.8 inches
  • Weight, including battery and keyboard -- 13.3 ounces (375 grams)
The HTC Advantage X7510 will be available in March, according to the company.
