 Microsoft has revealed a few more details of Zune, its answer to Apple's iPod. Technical details are still sketchy, but wireless capability that allows users to download media files without being tied to a PC, a key feature missing in the iPod, has been confirmed.

The device will be available in three colors -- black, white, and brown (brown?!). Other confirmed specs include a 30 GB disk and an FM radio tuner. The 3-inch LCD operates in either portrait or landscape orientation.
Earlier reports have suggested that the Zune will be manufactured for Microsoft by Toshiba, and is actually a variation on Toshiba's Gigabeat PMP.
However, Zune does not appear to bear much similarity to the Windows CE-based Portable Media Center devices that had been promoted for several years by Microsoft, and seem now to have more-or-less fallen by the wayside. Instead, the Zune seems to be a lower-end device, along the lines of the iPOD, and probably does not even contain a Microsoft-developed operating system, even though it's branded by the world's largest operating system maker.
Taking another page from Apple's playbook, Microsoft is also starting up a "Zune Marketplace," which will be stocked with "millions of songs" that can be downloaded over the Zune's WiFi connection. Tracks can be purchased individually, or through a "Zune Pass" subscription that allows users unlimited downloads, according to Microsoft. Additionally, Microsoft says the devices will come preloaded with content from record labels such as DTS, EMI Music's Astralwerks Records and Virgin Records, Ninja Tune, Playlouderecordings, Quango Music Group, Sub Pop Records, and V2/Artemis Records.
Besides being convenient for downloading content, wireless connectivity also allows users to share music tracks and pictures with other Zune users within WiFi range. Microsoft says recipients can play a full music track up to three times within three days, after which it must be purchased from the Zune Marketplace. Interestingly, received music tracks can't be shared further.
J Allard, Microsoft's vice president responsible for the design and development of the Zune family, stated, "The digital music entertainment revolution is just beginning. With Zune, we are not simply delivering a portable device, we are introducing a new platform that helps bring artists closer to their audiences and helps people find new music and develop new social connections."
Microsoft expects to have the Zune on store shelves in time for the year-end holiday season. No pricing details were offered for either the Zune or the Zune Marketplace services.
