Industrial touch panel computer runs Labview on Windows CE

National Instruments (NI) has introduced a series of HMI (human machine interface) devices for use with its LabVIEW graphical instrumentation development environment. One of the new devices, the TPC-2600, is a rugged, industrially-oriented touch panel computer running Windows CE.

The TPC-2600 sports a 266 MHz Intel ARM9 processor with 64 MB of Flash and a CompactFlash 2.0 expansion slot. The 5.7-inch QVGA (320 x 240) LCD with resistive touchscreen is protected by a NEMA4/IP65 certified front panel. Interfaces include 100 Mbps Ethernet, three RS232 serial ports, and two USB 1.1 ports.

Developers create applications for the TPC-2600 using the same LabVIEW PDA Module that supports Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Windows CE handhelds. The PDA Module automatically compiles LabVIEW VIs (virtual instruments) for Windows CE, and optimizes them for maximum performance on LabVIEW PDA-certified devices, according to the company.

A LabVIEW PDA Module deployment license is bundled with each touch-panel device includes, thereby eliminating additional deployment costs for LabVIEW applications, NI said.

In addition to supporting Windows CE and Windows Mobile, LabVIEW also runs on various Windows operating systems, including Windows XP Embedded. Additionally, both Ardence and TenaSys have released real-time support for LabView running on Windows XP and Windows XP Embedded.

Last month, NI released a major upgrade to LabVIEW that includes tools for designing, distributing, and synchronizing remote intelligent systems and devices.

Pricing for the TPC-2006 starts at $795, according to the company.
