Datalogic has announced a rugged, data capture handheld with a built-in laser scanner and extensive wireless capabilities. The Kyman Version 5 runs Windows CE 5.0 and will soon be available with Windows Mobile 6.0 as well, according to the company.

The Kyman is offered in both pistol-grip and normal handheld variants. Its comprehensive wireless capabilities include 802.11b/g WiFi with Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX V3), GSM/GPRS/EDGE cellular compatibility, and Bluetooth.

Datalogic says the device's GSM/GPRS/EDGE capabilities make "real-time transactions and enterprise resource access possible." Additionally, the unit can function as a voice or VoIP phone.

The Kyman is based on a Marvell PXA270 processor clocked at 520 MHz, and is equipped with 128 MB of RAM and 128 MB of flash memory. The latter is used both for permanent program storage and for backup of user data, according to the company.

The device has a 320 x 240 pixel LCD screen, and while the company's data sheet did not specify the size, this appears similar to the 2.8-inch, daylight-readable display offered on the company's recent Skorpio Gun. Datalogic says the Kyman's backlit keyboard may be used either as 53 full alphanumeric keys, or 36 numeric keys where the rest act as navigation keys.

Power -- removable battery pack with 2 x 2,200 MAh rechargeable li-ion batteries

According to Datalogic, a wide variety of software is supplied, including a Windows CE software development kit (SDK), a "DL-Locked-Web-Browser" application that runs via Internet Explorer, and a "DL-TCL-NET" terminal emulator. Wavelink Avalanche software is said to give administrators the ability to revise configurations, synchronize software, and update firmware and drivers remotely.

The Kyman appears to be available now, though "not in the Americas," but no pricing information was disclosed. More information is available on the company's website, here.
