Agfa Monotype announced that it has licensed ANT Limited's HTML-based Fresco browser and will market the browser as "Content Valet." The company says the small-footprint browser is suitable for embedding in devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, interactive television systems, set-top boxes, DVD players, home media centers, and in-vehicle systems.
According to Agfa Monotype, Content Valet is an efficient, full-featured, easy-to-use content rendering system for developers of resource-constrained devices, and offers a customizable user-interface that can be applied to a wide range of devices and applications. Typical applications are said to include: database, catalog, and graphic browsing; TV program searching, news and information display; interactive menu controlling; gaming interfaces; and e-commerce services.
The company says the browser is available as source code, and lends itself to parallel development whereby the user-interface can be designed while the browser is being integrated. Additionally, when moving from one platform to another, changes are not required within the core browser, allowing developers to instead focus on product differentiation, competitive advantages and reduced time-to-market.
Content Valet is part of Agfa Monotype's new Text & Imaging Pipeline technology suite. In addition to Content Valet, the Text & Imaging Pipeline provides options for input method editor technologies, text rendering systems and typefaces. Products in the pipeline include Agfa Monotype's iType font engine, based on TrueType and OpenType font standards. WorldType Layout Engine is available for composing, positioning and rendering multilingual text, including complex scripts. Subpixel rendering may be licensed as part of iType to maximize clarity on color LCD screens. Numerous font solutions are offered, including Agfa Monotype's Microsoft Windows-compatible core set, East Asian stroke-based fonts, TV and closed captioning fonts that meet FCC specifications, e-book fonts, Unicode-compliant typefaces, bitmap fonts, embedded bitmaps, custom fonts, and TrueType fonts from Agfa Monotype's extensive library.
