Panel PC family runs Microsoft Windows XP embedded

A new series of fanless Panel PCs from B&R Industrial Automation, running Microsoft Windows XP embedded, offers a large range of choices in terms of processor, memory, expansion and display size and resolution. Processor choices include three Celeron 3's, four Pentium M's, and two Celeron M's, with speeds ranging from 400MHz to 1.8GHz. Main memory choices range from 256MB to 1024MB of DRAM, and from 128M to 512M of SDRAM.

The Panel PCs run Windows XP embedded, Windows XP embedded Service Pack 2 and Windows XP Embedded Professional. Windows XP is the "preferred Panel PC operating system with low memory requirements," according to the company. "In addition to the known features from Windows XP professional, Windows XP embedded provides a write filter for individual memory partitions, further improving the reliability of the system." With the protection afforded by individual partitions, "the PC system starts without problems, even after a power failure." B&R offers preinstalled CompactFlash cards "to make the transition to Windows XP Embedded as easy as possible."

These new rugged Panel PC line offers a choice of touch-screen LCD: a 10.4-inch display with a VGA format, a 12.1-inch display with SVGA, and a 15-inch, XGA-format display. They also include a CompactFlash slot for a flash memory card with between 32MB and 2GB; a second CompactFlash socket or integrated hard disk drive is optional. Some models offer PCI expansion with either one or two slots. The two-slot variation can optionally be equipped with a slide-in CD-ROM, DVD-ROM/CD-RW, hard drive, or floppy disk drive.
