HTC unveils new Windows Mobile smartphone/PDA platforms

Taiwanese ODM (original design manufacturer) HTC on Sept. 7 announced a set of four new Windows Mobile 5.0 handhelds. The devices are intended to appeal to new audiences and market segments, and will be offered under both HTC's own brand and in customized operator-specific versions, according to the company.

S620 smartphone

At just one half inch thick, HTC describes the S620 (pictured above) as a "break-through form factor" for the company. It features an integrated QWERTY keyboard and is the first device to offer HTC's JOGGR touch sensitive navigation bar. The 2.4-inch LCD screen uses landscape orientation. Wireless connectivity includes quad-band GPRS/EDGE, plus WiFi and Bluetooth.

P3300 PDA

This device is HTC's first dedicated navigation PDA. It boasts a built-in GPS, and includes the latest TomTom software, Navigator 6. The device also comes with a "taster pack" of regional maps, or is offered in a version pre-loaded with a complete set of maps for Western Europe, according to HTC. The P3300 features HTC's RollR trackball and track wheel, and sports a 2.8-inch color screen.

HTC says that T-Mobile will offer the P3300 in several European markets as the MDA Compact III.

P3600 PDA

HTC describes the P3600 as a "next generation" PDA with "serious multi media capabilities." It is the successor to the company's popular Prophet and Magician platforms. The P3600 features a 2 Mpixel camera, 3G connectivity, and support for HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access).

The P3600 will be available in either a black or white glossy finish, according to HTC.

HTC says the quad-band, candy bar-style S310 offers "affordable access to Windows Mobile 5.0." It will be offered in a range of colors including black, white, and gray.

Top Windows Mobile ODM

HTC is widely considered to be the ODM source of some 80 percent of the world's Windows Mobile smartphones and PDA-phones. The company reported in May 2006 that its total revenues for April 2006 reached NT$7,596 million (approx. US$237 million), up 48.59 percent year-over-year, and that its total 2006 year-to-date revenues were NT$31,608 million (approx. US$986 million), up 72.14 percent over the same period of 2005.

HTC announced in June that it was acquiring popular Asian phone brand, Dopod. Later that month, the company began selling self-branded devices for the first time.

Availability

HTC says that all four of the new devices will be available in Europe during the fourth quarter, but did not comment on when the devices can be expected to appear in the U.S.

Technical details on the four new platforms were not immediately released.

Florian Seiche, VP of HTC Europe, stated, "Being able to offer the best customer experience on a dedicated device is extremely important for us -- no matter if it is for email, navigation, or multimedia focus. This new range of devices will enable both consumer and business users to make their personal choice within the rapidly growing segment of Smart Devices based on the powerful Windows Mobile platform."
