VIPA GmbH has added an XVGA (1024 x 768) version to its family of touch panel computers aimed at HMI (human machine interface) applications like factory and building automation. The TP612 runs Windows CE 5.0 and includes a die-cast aluminum case and MPI/Profibus-DP slave port.

The TP612 is based on a Marvell PXA270 processor clocked at 520MHz. It comes with 64MB of RAM and 32MB of flash memory, approximately 6MB of which is available to the user for storing data, VIPA says. A memory upgrade to 128MB of RAM is optionally available.

The 12.1 resistive touchscreen display complies with the Ingress Protection (IP) 65 standard, meaning that it is protected against both water and dust. In addition to offering 1024 x 768 resolution, it has a backlight that should last 50,000 hours, according to the company.

For memory expansion and other purposes, the device has both SD and CompactFlash Type II slots. Seen at the right in the picture above, these incorporate doors to protect installed cards from falling out should the system encounter vibration.

The isolated MPI/Profibus-DP slave port allows connecting to programmable logic controllers (PLCs). In addition, the TP612 has two RS232 serial ports, one isolated RS232/485 port, and two 10/100 LAN ports.

It also features USB host and device ports which, for example, could allow syncing to a desktop PC or connection of a keyboard. VIPA offers the choice of Windows CE 5.0 or Windows CE 5.0 Professional, so if customers really wanted to use their HMI computer to browse the Web or edit Office documents, they could.
