| Software lets Windows devices, desktops control each other |
Nov. 28, 2007
NetOp Tech has released a new version of its software for remotely controlling and supporting Windows Mobile devices. NetOp Mobile 9.1 now supports Windows Mobile 6 devices, and can both manage devices and allow them to manage desktops running various operating systems, according to the company.
NetOp Mobile has a client-server architecture consisting of "host" and "guest" components. When run on a Windows Mobile or CE device, the "NetOp Mobile & Embedded Host" allows the device to be controlled from a desktop PC. The "NetOp Mobile & Embedded Guest" does the reverse, letting a mobile device control a desktop PC or server.
Like previous versions, NetOp Mobile 9.1 can be used by device carriers to initiate help requests. Or, the software can be run in "stealth" or "kiosk" mode, said to protect against accidental termination.
Touted capabilities include:- Host side:
- Hardware inventory
- Checking device battery charge
- Checking WiFi signal strength
- Securely transferring files and updating software
- Messaging and technical support
- Guest side:
- Displaying a host desktop, with zoom function
- Remapping mouse and keyboard commands
- Logging off, shutting down, and restarting a host
- "Full access" to services, the registry, task manager, event protocols, releases, and consoles
NetOp Mobile is said to be highly scalable, enabling the addition of as many devices as required. Phone book entries and concurrent connects are limited only by disk space and memory, respectively, and the software uses a non-polling communication engine that only transmits when necessary, so it generates minimal network traffic, according to the company. Additionally, the software places minimal resource demands on the system. An optional security server provides central authentication, login, and logging.
NetOp Mobile & Embedded Host software runs on Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 6 devices, in addition to Windows Pocket PC 2003/2003SE. Windows Mobile & Embedded Guest software runs on these platforms plus Windows CE 5.0, and can control desktop PCs running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, and earlier versions of Windows including 2000, NT 4.0, and 9x. Linux, Solaris, and OS/2 PCs can also act as hosts.
NetOp Mobile software is said to be available now, though pricing was not provided.
