Windows Mobile handset sports intuitive touch UI

Taiwanese ODM HTC Corp. on June 5 unveiled a new Windows Mobile phone that features the company's newly developed "intuitive" touch screen navigation user interface (UI). The "deceptively small and stylish" touch implements a "an innovative new concept in intuitive touch screen navigation," the company claims.

The Touch phone is HTC's first device to use its self-developed "TouchFLO" touchscreen UI. HTC describes the UI as enabling users to "sweep their finger up the display to launch an animated, three-dimensional interface comprising three screens: Contacts, Media, and Applications."

"The interface can be spun by swiping a finger right or left across the display, providing efficient access to the features consumers use most," explains the company. According to HTC, TouchFLO enables easy finger-touch access to -- and scrolling of -- web pages, documents, messages, and contact lists. It's also said to be capable of distinguishing between finger and stylus input, and responding accordingly.

In a statement, HTC CEO Peter Chou said, "Mobile phone makers have done a great job of cramming ever-more exciting features into ever-smaller phones. But the way in which one accesses these increasingly sophisticated features has not kept pace. That ends today with the HTC Touch."

Key features and specifications of the Touch smartphone, according to HTC, include:

Memory -- 64MB RAM; 128MB flash
Removable storge -- 1GB microSD card included
Display -- 2.8-inch QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) 65K-color LCD touchscreen with backlight
Camera -- 2.0 mega-pixel CMOS color camera
Wireless Connectivity: GSM/GPRS/EDGE Tri-band: 900, 1800, 1900, Wi-Fi(R): IEEE 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth(R) 2.0
Dimensions -- 3.9 x 2.3 x 0.5 inches (99.9 x 58 x 13.9mm)
Weight -- 4 ounces (112g), with battery
Battery:
- rechargeable 1100 mAh Li-Ion battery
- Up to 5 hrs talk time, 200 hrs standby time

The device runs Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6 Professional software and is equipped with Direct Push email as well as HTML email capabilities. Other bundled software includes Internet Explorer, Outlook Mobile, Office Mobile, and Windows Live, among other typical smartphone utilities and applications.

Availability

The HTC Touch is currently available in the U.K., and is expected to be released later this month in Asia and throughout Europe, HTC said. A North and Latin American version of the device is scheduled for release during the second half of 2007. Pricing was not disclosed.
