Reports: Windows Phone 8 will switch to desktop kernel
Windows Phone 8 will move from its current Windows CE kernel to the same Windows NT core that Microsoft employs on the desktop, according to two separate reports. The revamped smartphone operating system will reportedly gain four screen resolutions, microSD support, NFC (near field communication), and more -- but will apparently still run apps written for Windows Phone 7.

SODIMM-sized Cortex-A8 module sports CAN bus, onboard flash
EMAC announced a SODIMM-sized computer-on-module (COM) that runs Windows CE 6.0 on a 600MHz TI ARM Cortex-A8 processor and can be purchased with a carrier board. The SoM-3517M offers up to 512MB of RAM, 1GB of NAND flash and 4GB of onboard eMMC flash, and I/O including Ethernet, four serial ports, three USB 2.0 ports, and CAN bus.

Congatec announced a COM Express module that offers a Type 6 pinout -- for VGA, LVDS, and DDI (digital display interface) display support -- and a choice of six soldered-on Intel & Sandy Bridge& processors. The Conga-TS67 offers up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, has eight USB 2.0 ports and four SATA ports, and has multiple PCI Express expansion lanes, according to the company.

MultiTouch Ltd. announced a Windows 7 PC that can be mounted on a table or as part of a video wall, with a 42-inch screen that supports an & unlimited& number of touch points and users. The MT420W7 has an Intel Core i7 processor, Nvidia GPU (graphics processing unit), 8GB of RAM and 128GB of SSD (solid state disk) storage, and employs infrared tracking as part of its backlighting, the company says.

MEN Micro announced a ruggedized, EMC- computer-on-module (COM) that uses the rugged ESMini form-factor and supports Intel Atom E600 processors at up to 1.6GHz. The MM2 offers up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, provides expansion options including PCI Express, CAN, and I2C, and supplies I/O including gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0, and SATA.

The CV41 features an eight-inch display, an integral QWERTY keyboard, and a 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor, while the CV61 has a 12.1-inch touchscreen and a 1.8GHz Atom D425 CPU, according to the company.

SeaMicro says it has packed 64 Intel Xeon processors into a device it says & uses half the power, takes one-third the space, and delivers twelve times the bandwidth of today's best-in-class servers.& The SM10000-XE has up to 2 terabytes of DDR3 memory, up to 64 SATA hard disks or solid state drives (SSDs), and up to 16 10 gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) or 64 1GbE ports, the company says.

Designed for & demanding image processing& applications, the Q7-TI8168 includes 1GB of DDR3 memory, up to 8GB of flash storage, two SATA ports, six USB ports, and an HDMI/DVI interface, according to the company.
